Some of you may already know me as a singer and musician. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to earn a living doing what I love most in the world: music. What you may not know is that music has played a vital role in my life, and has given me the strength to get through difficult times. JoannieBenoit Transparent

When I was 16 years old, I found out I had cancer of the femur with lung metastasis. It was a rare type of cancer—the same one Terry Fox bravely battled. It is hard to describe how that kind of news derails your life, especially when you are 16 years old. Soon after I started treatment, doctors told me I needed surgery on my leg. In the end, they had to amputate my left leg.

Thankfully, today, I am well. In addition to pursuing my passion for music, I want to give back to those who have supported me. I want to give back to all the medical professionals who saved my life and who helped me get through such a difficult time. I would also like to give hope to those currently battling cancer. Finally, I want to tell the young people who receive the same kind of news I did when I was a teen that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that even if the fight can be hard, it’s one worth fighting!

It is with immense pride that I have accepted the role of co-chair of the Tree of Hope Campaign. Last year, I had the fortune of representing the campaign as a gardener of hope, alongside co-chairs Robert Maillet and Denis Richard. As you know, Denis has lost his battle against cancer, but I hope to draw on his courage, determination and love of life to help the campaign achieve its goals. I believe we owe him that and it will be an honour for me to continue Denis’ work.

Every year since 1989, the Tree of Hope Campaign has raised funds in support of those fighting cancer here in New Brunswick. That’s the beauty of this campaign: all funds raised stay here in our province.

Your donation will directly support the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre, which treats more than 60,000 patients each year. It will also support improvements to equipment at satellite units in Northern New Brunswick. Your contribution will have an enormous impact on the quality of care offered to patients who stay for free at the Mgr.-Henri-Cormier Lodge during their treatments. Finally, your donation will be used to support cancer research efforts.

We are stronger together! Thanks to your support, the Tree of Hope Campaign can continue to improve the comfort and care of New Brunswick patients. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Thank you for supporting the Tree of Hope Campaign.
